Yogyakarta is a major center for the classical Javanese arts of batik, ballet, drama, music, poetry and puppet shows. A thousand years ago, Yogyakarta was the center of ancient Mataram Kingdom which was prosperous and highly civilized. This kingdom built Borobudur Temple which was the biggest Buddhist temple in the world, 300 years before Angkor Wat in Cambodia. The temple was lost in the jungle until the 20th Century, but now has been rediscovered and has become the number one tourist attraction in Indonesia. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The site is enormous and is laid out in successive levels that represent the different stages in the path towards enlightenment or Nirvana.
