Definition of Global Education: Our students increasingly function in a global arena. Education needs to prepare students to be citizens of the world. Our students must embrace a global perspective and become interdependent citizens by developing a global consciousness which embraces "universal" values. Globally competent students can investigate the world beyond their immediate borders, recognize cultural perspectives, communicate ideas effectively with diverse audiences, and become empowered to be players in the world while participating to build bridges of understanding.
Rationale:
Advances in technology and communication have transformed the world so that we now are all intricately linked together with everybody else on the planet. Americans now share concerns with people of Europe over the state of the economy, we recognize the impact of political instability in The Middle East, we acknowledge that we must cooperate with China to reduce carbon emissions, and the whole world realizes that fresh water is a valuable resource. Today the economies of the world are inextricably linked as trading partners, while at the same time investors seek out the best return on a global stock platform. As the world is getting smaller, people are realizing that our issues are global issues.
Global learning encourages awareness and critical thought about issues such as poverty, climate change, different religions and cultures as well as world trade and politics. Students who are educated about global issues, from multiple perspectives, are more likely to exhibit tolerance and acceptance of religious, cultural, and ethnic diversity.
Purpose of Resource Guide:
This guide is meant to be a user friendly resource to encourage teachers to think about a global viewpoint and create meaningful student centered projects that affect change.
